Two days and you spend most of your time orienting yourself. A week and you will have seen everything twice, unless you use the city as a base for the north. Three days gives you the Old Quarter, the French Quarter, the historical sites, a proper run at the food, and still leaves room for one trip out of town.

This 3 days in Hanoi itinerary is built for a first visit. It assumes you are staying centrally, that you want to walk rather than be shuttled, and that you would rather eat where people queue than where there is a menu in six languages.

Each of the 3 days in Hanoi is laid out by time block with rough durations and distances, so you can follow it exactly or lift the parts that suit you. Nothing here requires a car, and almost nothing requires booking ahead.

One thing worth saying at the start: Hanoi is not a checklist city. The best hour of your 3 days in Hanoi will probably be one you did not plan, sitting somewhere with a drink watching the street. Leave room for that.

<p in Hanoi

Three decisions shape how well 3 days in Hanoi works: which neighbourhood you sleep in, how you move around, and roughly what you expect to spend.

The three neighbourhoods that matter

Old Quarter. The dense grid of 36 ancient streets north of Hoan Kiem Lake. Loud, crowded, endlessly interesting, and where most of the street food is.

French Quarter. South and east of the lake. Wider boulevards, colonial architecture, the Opera House, the St. Joseph’s Cathedral better cafes and a calmer pace. Still walkable to everything. Our guide to the French Quarter covers it in detail.

Ba Dinh. West of the centre. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the Imperial Citadel and the Temple of Literature all sit here. You will visit, but you probably will not stay.

Base yourself in or between the Old Quarter and the French Quarter and this entire itinerary works on foot plus a handful of short rides.

Getting around

Walking. The default. Most of these 3 days in Hanoi cover 4 to 7 kilometres at an easy pace.

Grab. The ride hailing app, used for everything. Download it before you arrive and link a card. Car rides across the centre cost roughly 40,000 to 80,000 VND, motorbike rides about half that.

Taxi. Stick to Mai Linh and Vinasun if you take a street taxi. Grab is simpler and the price is agreed in advance.

Cyclo. More experience than transport. Carry small notes, since street vendors rarely break a 500,000. Cards work in restaurants and hotels, almost nowhere else.

Connectivity. An eSIM bought before you fly is the simplest option and usually costs under 10 US dollars for a week of data. Physical SIMs are cheap at the airport if you prefer.

Crossing the street. You will do this a few hundred times over 3 days in Hanoi. Walk slowly and steadily and do not stop. Traffic flows around people who are predictable. Hesitating in the middle is the one genuinely dangerous thing you can do.

Scams to know. The shoeshine who takes your shoe, the cyclo rider who renames the price at the end, the taxi with a fast meter and the friendly motorbike tour that becomes a shopping trip. All avoidable by agreeing prices first and using Grab.

Tipping. Not expected, increasingly common in tourist facing places. Rounding up is enough, 5 to 10 percent is generous in a restaurant.

Opening hours worth checking. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum closes on Mondays and Fridays and for annual maintenance. Most museums close on Mondays. Street food stalls sell out rather than close at a set hour.

Hanoi Train Street. Access has been restricted repeatedly. Some cafes along the track admit customers, enforcement comes and goes, and the situation changes. Check locally before building a plan around it.

When to come. Autumn and spring are the most comfortable seasons. See our guides to autumn in Hanoi and the weather month by month.

3 Days in Hanoi: Frequently Asked Questions

Is 3 days in Hanoi enough?
Yes. 3 days in Hanoi covers the Hanoi Old Quarter, the French Quarter, the main historical sites and the food, with one day left for a trip out of the city. Two days is tight, four is comfortable.

How many days do you need in Hanoi?
Three. 3 days in Hanoi is the standard recommendation for the city itself, and you add a day for each major excursion, such as Ninh Binh or an overnight Ha Long cruise.

What is the best area to stay in Hanoi for first time visitors?
The Old Quarter or the French Quarter, or the streets between them near Hoan Kiem Lake. Everything in this 3 days in Hanoi itinerary is then walkable or a short ride away.

Can you do Ha Long Bay as a day trip from Hanoi?
You can, but it means around five hours in a vehicle for roughly four on the water. An overnight cruise is a far better use of the time if your schedule allows.

Is Hanoi walkable?
Very. Days one and two of this itinerary cover 5 to 6 kilometres each. Pavements are uneven and often occupied by scooters, so comfortable shoes matter.

What is the best time of year to visit Hanoi?
Autumn, roughly September to November, and spring, March to April. October is the most comfortable single month. The official Vietnam tourism site publishes seasonal guidance for the whole country.

How much money do I need per day in Hanoi?
Around 15 to 20 US dollars a day eating on the street, 28 to 45 dollars for a mix of street food and restaurants, excluding accommodation and tours.

Do I need to book attractions in advance in Hanoi?
Almost nothing requires advance booking. The exceptions are the water puppet show in high season, cooking classes, and any day trip with a private car.

Where to Stay for Your 3 Days in Hanoi

3 days in Hanoi leaves no room for commuting.
