As one of the earliest French constructions in Hanoi, Dong Xuan market is still the largest trading hub in the capital. In 1888 with the establishment of Hanoi city, the French embarked on the management and construction of Hanoi as a “colonial” city. On April 6, 1888, the government signed a decision to establish a new market. The Dong Xuan market project was built by the French contractor Poinsard Veyret, providing the steel frame and roof, while another contractor undertakes the construction.
The design of the market is relatively simple: The whole market consists of 5 blocks and is divided by front arches, inside separated by paths between the arches (each market arch is 52m long, 19m high and 25m wide steel frame). The iron frames, the corrugated iron roof, the area is about 6500 m2. There are 3 gates to the market, and 2 niches, one to Hang Khoai, the other to Hang Chieu.
After the inauguration, Dong Xuan became the largest market in Hanoi. In official documents, the French call it “Les Halles centrales” or “Grand Marché” but the people still use the name of General Dong Xuan to name the market.
